Drug-Related Class
Action Lawsuits: Leveraging MediConnect
With over 11 years experience, MediConnect has helped hundreds
of our legal clients successfully retrieve medical
records in drug-related, class action law suits. Whether you
are representing a plaintiff or defendant, you can leverage
MediConnect's expertise to help you win your case.
The first step in any
drug-related litigation is to determine if the case has any
merit. Typically, this is determined by analyzing pharmacy
records to confirm the drug was in fact prescribed, how much
was prescribed and the doctor who wrote the prescription.
The second step, if the
case has merit, is to request records from the doctor who
wrote the prescription to try and determine the extent (if any) of
damage that may be attributed to the drug. This may require a
few records spanning months or many records spanning
years, depending on the patient and the situation.
Yasmin, Cipro and
Levaquin are drugs gaining momentum right now
in class action lawsuits. Yasmin (or Yaz,
which has a lower level of estrogen) is a birth control pill
that received FDA approval in 2001 and has been a big hit
because of its perceived effectiveness, ease of use,
and safety. However, certain risk factors have recently been
identified (heart / cardiovascular problems, diabetes, high blood
pressure, overweight, etc.) that when present in persons taking the
drug may lead to a much higher risk of serious side effects such
as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), stroke,
heart attack and death.
Cipro and Levaquin are both synthetic
antibiotics in a group of drugs called fluoroquinolones. The drugs
fight bacteria in the body by stopping the production of essential
proteins needed by the bacteria to survive. Cipro was originally
manufactured and sold by Bayer A.G. while Levaquin is marketed by
Ortho-McNeil.
Serious, rare side effects common to all
fluoroquinolones include tendon damage (known as quinolone-induced
tendonopathy), irreversible peripheral neuropathy, QT
prolongation, abnormal blood sugar levels, and central nervous
system effects such as dizziness, insomnia, anxiety, tremors, and
even hallucinations and seizures.

Individuals Take Control of Their
Health
Now more than ever, people want
control of their own health care. They want to be involved in
the health decisions affecting the well-being of themselves
and their families. Access to personal medical records is a
vital part of this control.
In a video currently posted on the
MediConnect web site, MediConnect CEO, Amy Rees Anderson,
discusses how consumers owning personal copies of their
medical records gives them more power over their health
decisions. She discusses the importance of interpreting
and understanding the information and how MediConnect can help
to "mine" data for use in Google Health.

Client Spotlight: Aronfeld Trial
Lawyers
We are located in the beautiful city of Coral
Gables, FL, a suburb of Miami. Aronfeld Trial Lawyers has
seven full-time and three part-time employees, including three
attorneys. We mainly represent clients with major life-altering
injuries due to incidents of Medical Malpractice and Personal
Injury. We seek to separate our firm from the norm by providing
superior customer service to our clients. Our team members hail from
four different countries, and are able to give our assistance in
English, Spanish, German, Arabic, French, and Sign Language.
Attorney, Bruce E. Shemrock, is in charge of our
firm's green initiative to become paperless. As part of that, we
decided to exclusively use MediConnect for our medical records
requests. At first we thought the concept was "neat," but we are now
seeing great rewards. Probably the best is the ability to
track how often (almost daily for each record) MediConnect follows
up. Even if our staff could do it as often, it would cost us far
beyond the MediConnect fee to do so. That in itself is worth the
file-retrieval fee. Also, because we now consider our office
paperless, having the records already delivered in electronic format
is a major plus.
To top it off, we use the TrialWorks/MediConnect integration
which saves a fortune in both costs and paralegal time. It is such a
time and step saver to make the request, send the scanned
authorization, track the status, and view the records all within one
software (TrialWorks), and all without leaving one's desk. It also
makes it so much easier for our staff to work remotely, from home or
while laying on the beach.
As with any business in this economy, our firm seeks to
differentiate itself from the competition. Led by founder
Spencer Aronfeld (whose credentials include frequent national
speaking engagements and admission to practice before the U.S.
Supreme Court), our firm takes cases where we have an opportunity to
correct an injustice.
Our legal expertise is extensive, but we've not forgotten that
compassion and personal attention are part of case preparation too.
We appear at national events and in major publications, but we
ultimately represent the individual, and that's where our focus
remains. It is important to us to have our clients' trust, and we
work hard to earn it.

November 2008 issue, Entrepreneur Magazine highlighted the "Top 50
Fastest-Growing Women Led Companies" in the United States. Amy
Rees Anderson, CEO of MediConnect Global, Inc. ranked 16th on the
list.
"It's a true honor to be recognized by a
publication as relevant to entrepreneurship as Entrepreneur
